About Hubert Bailey

About the author (2017) Hubert Bailey was born and raised in Dawsonville, Georgia, a small town located in north Georgia, near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Hubert's upbringing consisted of farm life, where he was raised around many animals and found joy in training them.

In 1977, Hubert attended his first sheepdog trial in Pike Road, Alabama. During this time, he made the acquaintance of Arthur Allen, Ralph and Lewis Pulfer, R. T. Averitt and Foy Evans. He purchased a pup from Mr. Allen and a starter dog from R. T. Averitt. This marked the beginning of Hubert's fascination with training and working dogs, specifically border collies. He began to use them on his own farm and soon acquired valuable knowledge for training and working the dogs.

Hubert entered his first trial in 1978, hosted by Robert Barlow and Etroy McCaslin in Counce, Tennesee. He originally asked Etroy to enlist him in the Beginners Class, but Etroy responded, "There is no money in Beginners, you will run in Open Class." Hubert did as Etroy had said and placed 3rd in his first open trial.

Hubert has competed in sheep and cattle dog trials all over the United States for the past 30 years, and most of the dogs that he competed with, he also trained. He now enjoys teaching, herding and training dogs and their handlers. He has held numerous training clinics and trials over the last 20 years on his farm, which is located in Dawsonville, Georgia.
